Eiryanne, an orphan, is on the run after her village is brutally attacked and destroyed by the evil Emperor's soldiers. Little does Eiryanne know that her chance encounter with a strange man would change her life forever and reveal her true destiny. The man, a shapeshifter, is Danzellius Daggoras, the Red Dragon, The Lord of Fire, an ancient warrior and mage. Eiryanne learns she is a descendant of a long line of human mages and her only possession—The Necklace of Tairung—was left to her by her parents for safekeeping against its malevolent creator, the corrupt black unicorn, Tairung. Together, Eiryanne and Danzi must navigate their way to Boyerin Cavern where the necklace can be destroyed, and its evil creator silenced forever. As they set out, Eiryanne is uneasy about her alliance with Danzi and is frightened by his violence and ease at which he kills. She knows she has no choice, her destiny is in his hands, but to what end?

Danzi gave his brother a look and said something in Draconic. Lianos's jaw tightened as he gazed into the other mage's fiery eyes. Then he looked at the ground, hesitating. "Kill him soldier," the councilor to Molekk's right shouted. "That's an order." Lianos looked torn. He half-heartedly run a hand along the hilt of one of his daggers, glancing again between his brother and the councilor. The tension in the air between the three of them was palpable... Suddenly, the brothers fell silent. As if on cue, both of them released a wave of fire. Orange and blue flames clashed in the middle and exploded, setting half the tables aflame. Eiryenne followed the crowd as they run from the smoke and heat, sprinting between the tents until they reached a small field free of buildings. There they all paused, catching their breath, and peering out over the tents, trying to see the battle. Two shapes hurtled over the tops of the cabins in front of them, landing with a thud in the middle of the clearing in another splash of flames. Councilors, warriors, and teenagers alike all stumbled back, leaving a space in the middle where the two figures faced off.
