Der aus Marseille stammende Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) war Maler, Bildhauer und Grafiker. Berühmt wurde er mit seinen politischen und gesellschaftkritischen Karikaturen, zumeist Lithographien, die er in den Satirezeitschriften "Le Charivari" und "La Caricature" veröffentlichte. Der Gesamtbestand an Lithographien umfasst etwa 4000 Blätter. Daumiers beste Arbeiten zielen gleichermaßen auf die Elite der Gesellschaft wie Parlamentsabgeordnete, Richter und die Bourgoisie als auch auf Kleinbürger und Proletariat. Über den Autor Kurt Bertels (1877 1910) ist wenig bekannt. Neben einigen kunsthistorischen Arbeiten veröffentlichte er mit "Der Morgenreiter" einen Gedichtband. Bertels verunglückte 1910 während einer Orientreise tödlich auf der Insel Korfu. Nachdruck der 1908 erschienenen Originalausgabe.
