Uprostřed roku 1945 se 2.světová válka nacházela ve svém závěrečnem stadiu. Německo v květnu bezpodmínečně kapitulovalo, vůdce nacistů Adolf Hitler byl mrtev a krvavý konflikt v Tichomoří se přenesl až k samotným japonským břehům. Japonské ostrovy už byly v té době vystaveny masivním americkým náletům a japonské velení se zcelaopravněně obávalo zničujicího závěrečného amerického útoku. Japonci v té době měli stále ještě k dispozici poměrně značné množství zbraní a materiálu - a jejich vojska včetně leteckých sil se vyznačovala úžasnou bojovou morálkou. Vznikly letky sebevražedných pilotů Kamikaze, kteří měli k dispozici ještě téměř jedenáct tisíc letadel. Pro jejich účely bylo upraveno kolem 4.800 armádních a 5.900 námořních stíhaček a bombardérů, výzvědných a výcvikových strojů. V krutých bojích zahynuly stovky Kamikaze, většinu této úžasné letecké síly zničila americká protiletadlová obrana a americké vzdušné síly.
