Roberto Bolaño, geboren 1953 in Santiago de Chile, lebte in Mexiko, kehrte 1972 nach Chile zurück, saß nach Pinochets Militärputsch für kurze Zeit im Gefängnis und ging dann ins Exil. Seit 1976 lebte er mit seiner Familie in Spanien. Für sein Werk, das in viele Sprachen übersetzt wurde und in Deutschland bei Kunstmann und Hanser erscheint, erhielt er den renommierten Rómulo-Gallegos-Preis. Er starb 2004.
