V dubnu 1944 se Rudolf Vrba zařadil mezi hrstku lidí, jimž se podařilo utéct z Osvětimi. Udělal to, aby odhalil pravdu o táboře smrti a varoval poslední Židy v Evropě před krutým osudem čekajícím na konci železniční trati. Rudolf Vrba propašoval ven vůbec první popis Osvětimi – a ten se dostal až k Franklinu Rooseveltovi, Winstonu Churchillovi nebo papeži.
