Třináctiletí Niles a Holland jsou nerozlučná dvojčata; jsou na sebe opravdu hodně napojení, ale čtenář si spíš vzpomene na Jekylla a Hydea: zatímco Niles je hodný kluk schopný soucitu s nemocnou maminkou a vlastně i s ostatními, Holland je škodolibý darebák, který vše shazuje a ironizuje. Početná rodina se ve třicátých letech sjíždí do venkovského městečka v Connecticutu na pohřeb tragicky zesnulého otce a Holland všem tetičkám, dalším příbuzným i sousedům škodí, jak se dá – občas v jeho přítomnosti nepřežije nějaké zvíře nebo snad i člověk a očividně se vše, co s ním souvisí, vymyká z rukou.
