Moses Hess (1812-1875) war ein Philosoph und Schriftsteller deutsch-jüdischer Herkunft, der den deutschen und europäischen Frühsozialismus mitbegründet hat und ein Vorreiter des sozialistischen Zionismus war. Nach seinem nicht abgeschlossenen Studium der Philosophie gründete Hess eine der ersten sozialistischen Tageszeitungen in Köln. Er veröffentlichte „Rom und Jerusalem“, sein bekanntestes Werk und inzwischen ein Klassiker der zionistischen Theorie, in welchem er zum ersten Mal national-jüdische Gedanken formulierte und einen jüdischen Nationalstaat forderte. Bei seiner Arbeit für den Rheinischen Merkur kam Hess mit Karl Marx und dessen Theorien in Kontakt. Als Philosoph bewunderte er Spinoza und Hegel, dessen „Weltgeist“ folgend sah Hess rückblickend in der Französischen Revolution ein neues Weltzeitalter aufziehen.
