    George Augustus Moore war ein irischer Romanautor, Novellist, Dichter, Kunstkritiker, Memoirenautor und Dramatiker. Ursprünglich wollte er Maler werden und studierte in den 1870er Jahren Kunst in Paris, wo er sich mit führenden französischen Künstlern und Schriftstellern anfreundete. Als naturalistscher Schriftsteller gehörte Moore zu den ersten englischsprachigen Autoren, die die Lehren der französischen Realisten, insbesondere von Émile Zola, aufnahmen. Sein Werk beeinflusste James Joyce maßgeblich und wird oft als der erste große moderne irische Romanautor angesehen.
