Palestinians often project a unified national identity to counter Israeli efforts to create divisions among them. However, this seemingly cohesive image conceals deep internal tensions and conflicts. Dieser Band nutzt Methoden und Konzepte der soziologischen Biografieforschung und der Figurationssoziologie, um den Nahostkonflikt jenseits der Polarität zwischen „Israelis“ und „Palästinensern“ zu analysieren. In einem Vergleich von fünf städtischen Regionen wird die Bedeutung von Zugehörigkeit, kollektiven Selbstbildern und unterschiedlicher Formen sozialer Differenzierung ergründet.

Mehr als zwei Millionen Menschen mit deutschem Familienhintergrund sind seit 1989 aus den Ländern der ehemaligen Sowjetunion nach Deutschland eingewandert. Ihre Familiengeschichten sind von teilweise traumatischen Umbrüchen geprägt, etwa durch die Verfolgungen und Deportationen im Zuge des Zweiten Weltkriegs. In diesem Band wird unter anderem gezeigt, welchen Einfluss die Vergangenheit auf das Leben der nachfolgenden Generationen hat. Hinzu kommt, dass diese Familien oft aus mehreren Ethnien zusammengesetzt sind: eine kasachische Großmutter, ein russischer Vater – was bedeutet dies für die Konstruktion von Wir-Bildern innerhalb dieser Familien? Die Selbst- und Fremdbilder, die uns in diesem Band begegnen, machen die Schwierigkeiten insbesondere der jüngeren der so genannten Russlanddeutschen verständlicher.

The subjects of ethnicity and collective belonging have enjoyed high priority on the agenda of social science research over the last 20 years. Nevertheless there is need (and considerable scope) for further mutual adjustment and refinement of theoretical concepts, substantive empirical discoveries and research techniques. This volume offers a contribution to such efforts by leading practitioners of qualitative research with backgrounds in diverse disciplines. Their research focuses on the perspectives and biographical experiences of concrete „historical“ actors within the contexts of migration, cultural diversity and social conflicts.
