Il est des vies qui semblent des romans. Celle de Marita Lorenz, tout particulièrement. Née à Brême en 1939 d'une Américaine et d'un Allemand, Marita est emprisonnée au camp de Bergen-Belsen où elle ne survit que par miracle. Libérée par les Américains, elle est victime d'un viol à l'âge de sept ans. Dès lors, elle tente de fuir la réalité en embarquant sur les paquebots que commande son père, le capitaine Heinrich Lorenz. En 1959, lors d'une escale à La Havane, Fidel Castro, jeune chef de la révolution cubaine, monte à bord du Berlin. C'est le coup de foudre. Mais le capitaine refuse de lui accorder la main de sa fille. Celle-ci s'enfuit et devient la compagne du lider maximo, dont elle attend bientôt un enfant... Des événements tragiques l'obligent pourtant à regagner seule les Etats-Unis.
