Wohnungsbau schafft die Zimmer, Nachbarschaften und Städte, in denen wir unseren Alltag verbringen. Zunehmend aber wird die Wohnungsfrage auf ein immobilienwirtschaftliches Thema reduziert, insbesondere das Fehlen alternativer gesellschaftlicher Akteure macht sich schmerzlich bemerkbar. Die Folge: Für immer mehr Menschen schwinden die Möglichkeiten, über bezahlbaren Wohnraum selbstbestimmt zu verfügen. Die spannungsgeladene Beziehung von Architektur, Wohnungsbau und sozialer Realität untersucht das HKW-Projekt Wohnungsfrage in einer Ausstellung experimenteller Wohnformate, einer internationalen Akademie sowie einer Publikationsreihe, die sich mit den Möglichkeiten eines selbstbestimmten, sozialen und bezahlbaren Wohnungsbaus befasst. Die Reihe präsentiert historische Schlüsselwerke neu kommentiert und aktuelle internationale Fallstudien sowie Publikationsprojekte der beteiligten stadtpolitischen Initiativen, die mit Architekten und Künstlern kooperieren.

In der Stillen Straße 10 im Berliner Bezirk Pankow führen SeniorInnen selbstverwaltet und in Eigeninitiative eine Begegnungsstätte für Jung und Alt. Nachdem 2012 die Schließung und der Verkauf drohten, besetzten die Mitglieder 112 Tage lang das Haus. Bis heute ist die Zukunft des Ortes ungesichert. Das Londoner Architekturkollektiv Assemble hat sich mit den Senioren über Gemeinschaftsbildung, bürgerschaftliches Engagement und Wohnen im Alter ausgetauscht und entwirft für 'Wohnungsfrage' ein Wohnkonzept, in dessen Zentrum ein Raum gemeinsamer Aktivitäten steht.

This collection explores participatory architecture and urban development through various interviews and contributions. It discusses informal building practices in Mexico City and the potential lessons for architects, as well as the role of interim uses in urban planning and stakeholder engagement. The text examines informal transformations in East German housing, highlighting resistant urban practices and the involvement of women and queer communities in planning. It emphasizes cooperative planning processes and diversification strategies in cities like Halle-Neustadt. Local actors' perspectives on self-organized transformations in Europe are presented, along with concepts for adaptable housing and industrial building experiments from the past. The book also covers fluid architecture and the integration of technology in custom construction, alongside models for sustainable community practices and cooperative self-determination. It reflects on the architectural implications of user participation and collective design in various contexts, including a case study of the Wiener Sargfabrik. Design for a democratic society was a matter of urgency in bombed-out postwar Europe. Swiss sociologist, journalist, professor and founding father of strollology Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) pioneered the interdisciplinary analysis of man-made environments, and thereby highlighted both the visible and invisible aspects of our cities and social relations. Acutely aware of how our interventions and decisions shape the world, and how the changing world in turn, shapes us, his life-long focus was not only the prerequisites of architecture, urban planning and design but also their long-term impact. Teaching and practice still owe much to his work. Thus, the first selection of Lucius Burckhardt’s texts to appear in English, introduces his groundbreaking theory of environmental design, in retrospective tribute to a prescient thinker.
