The Marquis de Condorcet (1743-94), Perpetual Secretary of the Academie des Sciences, member of the Legislative Assembly and the Convention, mathematician, political theorist, economic reformer, defender of the public good, was the last of the "philosophes" of the "ancien regime, " and the only one to witness the French Revolution and to play an active part in it.
