This gazetteer is the first to treat all four national languages of Switzerland equally, providing pronunciation details for Swiss place-names. It incorporates pronunciations from radio announcers, local speakers, and various publications. Names are sourced from dictionaries, encyclopaedias, gazetteers, maps, and postal directories, including variant and obsolete spellings. Due to the lack of a defined Swiss-German pronunciation for written German, German place-names feature syllable patterns and stress marks instead of full phonetic transcription, accompanied by introductory remarks on their orthoepy. In contrast, full segmental phonetic transcription is provided for French, Italian, and Romansch place-names. French follows Warnat's dictionary with broad allophonic transcription, stress marks, and no syllable boundaries. Italian adheres to the RAI dictionary, incorporating allophonic length for stressed vowels. Romansch transcription is a compromise between Planta/Schorta and Rumantsch Grischun. The gazetteer contains approximately 13,000 entries, with IPA (API) used for transcription. Each place-name includes its cantonal location, and the bibliography cites 43 titles.
