Recent decades have seen a significant rise in research on animal acoustic communication, with an increase in scientific publications covering both empirical and theoretical aspects. The launch of the journal Bioacoustics highlights this growing interest. Many current issues in the field benefit from an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on contributions from traditionally separate areas of inquiry. Aside from a collection edited by Lewis in 1983, there have been few volumes focused on technical aspects of comparative bioacoustics since the earlier works by Lanyon and Tavolga (1960) and Busnel (1963). The substantial growth of expertise in this area motivated the organization of this volume, which aims to present fundamental information on both theoretical and applied aspects of contemporary bioacoustics research. While a comprehensive review is impractical, this volume provides a foundational treatment of various topics, offering a conceptual framework for researchers to explore their own questions. Each contribution is designed to be accessible and beneficial to a wide range of researchers, including those currently engaged in diverse bioacoustics disciplines and newcomers to the field.
