When the first edition was published in 2001, numerous resources existed on semiconductor physics, often focusing on specialized phenomena or fundamental concepts. This made it challenging to grasp advanced semiconductor physics without a solid foundation. The author aimed to fill this gap for those engaged in semiconductor research and development. The work covers energy band structures, effective mass equations, and k·p perturbation, while also addressing critical phenomena such as optical effects, transport, magnetoresistance, and quantum effects. Some readers noted that the textbook is not only basic but also advanced, suggesting the title may not fully represent its content. However, the author believes the title remains fitting, as a solid understanding of fundamental physics is essential for grasping advanced semiconductor concepts. Over time, new and complex phenomena in semiconductors have become recognized as foundational. Following the first edition, typographical errors were corrected in a 2006 version. Encouraged by the publisher and peers, the author decided to revise the book, adding new chapters while maintaining an appropriate level for readers.
