On behalf of the program committee, we are pleased to present the proceedings of the Fifth Symposium on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). Since its inception in 1998, RAID has become the premier annual event for intrusion detection, attracting global researchers, practitioners, and vendors. The 2002 program committee received 81 submissions (64 full papers and 17 extended abstracts) from 20 countries, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. Each submission underwent thorough review by at least three committee members or additional experts, focusing on scientific novelty, significance, and technical quality. Final selections were made during a meeting on May 15–16, 2002, in Oakland, USA, resulting in sixteen full papers and three extended abstracts being chosen for presentation. The program encompassed both fundamental research and practical issues, organized into seven sessions covering topics such as anomaly detection, stepping-stone detection, alarm correlation, intrusion detection system assessment, intrusion tolerance, legal aspects, adaptive systems, and analysis. RAID 2002 also featured a panel on “Cybercrime,” addressing concerns for security experts and the public. The keynote speech, “Challenges for the Future of Intrusion Detection,” was delivered by Marcus J. Ranum, founder of Network Flight Recorder, Inc.
