This special issue of Schmollers Jahrbuch showcases research from the four hundred teams utilizing the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), presented at the Fifth International Conference of SOEP Users in Berlin in July 2002. The papers cover various social science fields and countries. The first set focuses on wage and income inequality and mobility, introducing a new method for measuring mobility across income distributions and a decomposition technique for analyzing wage inequality changes. Another study examines income mobility in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States to test welfare state hypotheses. A second group of papers addresses transitions to and from unemployment, exploring factors influencing job-finding and unemployment duration, including psychological aspects. Wage determinants are discussed, highlighting issues such as the negative correlation between maternity leave and subsequent wages, as well as potential biases from non-responses to wage inquiries. Further research documents the impact of changes in personal status on income, such as the decline in real equivalent income for widowed women. Other studies utilize SOEP features to investigate savings behavior, wage subsidy effects on employment, and the relationship between parental care time and children's academic success. Lastly, one paper analyzes smoking behavior across the life cycle in four countries.
