How many biblical stories can you still recite? And how can we best impart such stories to children who do not yet read? What type of book would best ignite a child’s fantasy and indelibly stamp such tales on their memory? These are the questions that led the editor Horst Heinemann and the illustrator Gabriele Hafermaas to develop a small Bible for children to carry around with them like a little treasure. The result is the Backpocket Bible – 27 pictures depicting biblical stories printed on tear-resistant and waterproof paper in a format fitting the trouser or coat pocket of 3- to 7-year-olds. The pictures are meant to lead the children to ask the question: “Can you please read me the story of this picture?”
