"This book is the first full-scale presentation of Oskar Hansen's Open Form and at the same time a monograph of his work. It is made up of two parts – a presentation of the different fields of Hansen’s work, selected and arranged by the author himself, and a chronology showing events in his life and work on a temporal axis. For the author, the book's visual design has become one of the ways of presenting his Open Form idea: the contents ‘flow‘ before reader eyes, taking them from one topic to another. The nontextual introduction is an iteration from the Polish catalogue for the 1960 Milan Triennial. 'Bridging' the book’s two parts are interviews with the artist: Joanna Mytkowska’s in the first part, and fragments of Hans Ulich Obrist’s in the second. Both parts are arranged into a structure proposed by Oskar Hansen: MACRO – MEZZO – MICRO, which in the first part presents the idea of Open Form in a 'flowing' way, moving from the general model (MODEL), through the urban-planning concepts on the scale of country, or even the continent, the Linear Continuous System (MACRO), and housing-development designs (MEZZO), to more detailed projects for individual buildings, monuments, pavilions, museums and gardens (MICRO). In the second part, the chronology, the three areas intertwine. Each is marked by a different colour: black for MODEL, green for MACRO, blue for MEZZO, yellow for MICRO, gray for pedagogy and other special events. The author’s descriptions, the selection of the works presented, along with drawings made in 2004 are a recapitulation of the idea of Open Form from a temporal perspective." (Jola Gola)
