This is the fourth volume in the "Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences" series, based on material presented in tutorials or developed by visitors and postdoctoral fellows at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) at The Ohio State University. The series aims to introduce graduate students and researchers with minimal backgrounds in mathematics or biology to mathematical modeling of biological processes. Previous volumes covered mathematical neuroscience, calcium dynamics in signal transduction, and topics related to the cell cycle, tumor growth, and cancer therapy. This volume focuses on evolution and ecology, featuring topics discussed at the MBI during 2005–2006, including phylogenetics, the evolution of genes through migration-selection, ecological modeling, and the evolution of dispersal and population dynamics. Phylogenetics, the study of evolutionary relationships among genes and organisms, is represented through graphs where leaves denote observed biological entities. The first two chapters specifically address phylogenetics, aiming to trace the evolution of species, traits, or diseases. Documentation of the 2005–2006 activities, including streaming videos of the workshops, is available on the MBI website.
