20th-century music is characterized by a confusing multitude of trends and movements. Several, even contrary, movements often coexist at the same time, reflecting intellectual tendencies, social and political changes and responses thereto. With this book, the renowned musicologist and author Constantin Floros provides a survey of the different styles and tendencies of New Music. He presents the most important composers, from Schoenberg to Rihm, in an essayistic manner which is even comprehensible for amateurs. And since, to him, biography and music are inseparable, this publication takes into account both musical aspects and contemporary, psychological and social background information. Constantin Floros, born in Saloniki in 1930, studied musicology, art history, philosophy and psychology in Vienna. He earned a Ph. D. in 1955 and qualified as a university lecturer in 1961. He was professor of musicology at the University of Hamburg from 1967-95, focussing on music of the Middle Ages and the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. He is a member of the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Erfurt, president of the Mahler-Vereinigung Hamburg, and lecturer at international music symposions. He wrote numerous publications, particularly on Mozart, Bruckner, Mahler, Brahms, and Alban Berg and Ligeti.
