For over two decades, The role of social networks in the development process has increasingly gained importance in the scientific debate during the last two decades. However, the term social network and related concepts like social capital, vulnerability and resilience have been used in so many different contexts that their analytical value has been blurred. In an introductory chapter the value of various approaches to social networks is examined. This is followed by empirical case studies on the role and functioning of social networks which might bring the whole discussion on social networks in the context of survival and development much further by looking closely at what is actually happening in South Africa. What do social networks stand for in various contexts? How do they work? Are there winners and losers? These are just a few questions that are dealt with. The case studies presented here are dealing with networks in the urban area of Cape Town, with networks that are connecting rural and urban areas as well as with networks in rural areas.
