Embodied agents are increasingly vital in cognitive interaction technology, encompassing virtual humans in simulated environments and humanoid robots in the real world. While research has primarily focused on their practical applications, designing communicative artificial agents also offers significant insights into the scientific study of communication. This approach enables researchers to isolate and test essential properties of inter-agent communication within operational models. By modeling communication through robots and virtual humans, researchers aim to use these machines as tools to better understand the internal mechanisms of natural, multimodal communication. Constructing embodied agents capable of communication may illuminate the principles underlying human interaction. The theme of “Embodied Communication in Humans and Machines” was explored by an international research group at Bielefeld University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research from October 2005 to September 2006. The goal was to create an integrated perspective on embodiment in communication, linking lower-level sensorimotor functions with higher-level communicative functions involving language and bodily action. This volume emerged from a workshop held from April 5–8, 2006, at the ZiF, as part of the research year focused on embodied communication.
