A foreword for the workshop proceedings requires an understanding of the broader context of the AMI conference, which introduced a novel format in 2007. This conference aims to create a platform for research in ambient intelligence within the Post-PC era, complementing existing focuses on ubiquitous and pervasive computing. Additionally, it seeks to attract global contributions while highlighting European strengths, particularly in relation to the Information Society Technologies (IST) sector of the EU research framework programs. The workshop organization chairs reflected these goals in their call for proposals by emphasizing two key measures: soliciting workshops that delve into the ambient intelligence aspect of Post-PC research and offering two distinct workshop threads. One thread focuses on advanced topics, termed “SW workshops,” while the other is dedicated to workshops linked to specific EU FP6 and FP7 projects, known as “EU workshops.” This structure aims to foster in-depth discussions and collaborations that align with the conference's innovative vision.
