Current discussions of global recession highlight the risks associated with the globalized economic system. The complex socio-economic-ecological system is challenging to analyze and communicate effectively without advanced visualization tools. Planners, who are crucial in preparing and building resilience in affected communities, require these tools for effective planning. However, they have been slow to adopt advancements in visualization research from other fields. The study of 3-dimensional environments has gained traction in computer science, with numerous influential articles emerging. Additionally, disciplines like graphic design, geography, and cartography have pioneered new visualization and communication methods, both conceptually and technologically. In contrast, planning literature has primarily relied on geographic information systems (GIS), which still produce two-dimensional spatial maps that have not evolved significantly over the past decade. While research on planning support systems and GIS has advanced, particularly in integrated models of transportation, land use, and the environment, visualization research in planning has lagged behind. This volume seeks to address this gap in the planning literature, emphasizing the need for innovative visualization approaches to enhance planning practices.
