The term utopia, derived from the Greek ‘u-’ (non) and ‘tópos’ (place), signifies a ‘nowhere’ that embodies our longing for an unreachable ideal. Utopia represents an imaginative concept of a world or time characterized by a new social, religious, or technical order. Its origins can be traced to Thomas Morus's 1516 work, which envisions positive scenarios of unfulfilled technical, spatial, and social constructs. Technology often plays a crucial role in these utopian visions, frequently serving as the foundation for artistic endeavors, particularly in digital art. In 2008, Paraflows 08 UTOPIA aims to explore this perspective, linking back to the previous year's exhibitions. The focus will be on gathering concepts for a possible future, drawing on dreams and forecasts while taking a prognostic look ahead. Building on last year's festival theme of UN_SPACE, which examined non-space and impossible spaces, this year's event will continue to provide a multi-layered analysis within the architectonic and historical context of the MAK Gegenwartskunstdepot Gefechtsturm Arenbergpark. This exploration seeks to engage with the complexities of utopian thought and its implications for our understanding of the future.
