Little research has been done so far about the fact that the metaphor of the theatre served also as a broad setup of knowledge. This volume deals for the fi rst time with the extensive theatrical implications of premodern cultures of knowledge. The broad panorama of essays traces the historical dimensions and the scope of meanings of the Theatrum-metaphor in early modern times. The covered discourses prove as multifaceted as the context and media that used the metaphor and touches central processes of access, order and representation of knowledge.
