The 10th international workshop “Engineering Societies in the Agents’ World” (ESAW 2009) took place in Utrecht, The Netherlands, from November 18–20, 2009. Continuing the tradition of its predecessors, ESAW 2009 focused on multi-agent systems (MAS) as interconnected societies of agents, emphasizing social aspects, methodologies, and software infrastructures that address the complexities of MAS. The workshop series originated in 1999 among the “Communication, Coordination and Collaboration” working group of AgentLink, the first European Network of Excellence on Agent-Based Computing. The discussions highlighted the necessity for a systematic approach to MAS, integrating social, environmental, and technological perspectives. These concerns remain relevant today, as evidenced by the ongoing interest in the ESAW series, which has previously convened in various locations: Berlin (2000), Prague (2001), Madrid (2002), London (2003), Toulouse (2004), Kusadasi (2005), Dublin (2006), Athens (2007), and Saint-Etienne (2008). This 10th workshop centered on technologies, methodologies, and models for engineering complex applications based on MAS, attracting researchers from diverse fields, including software engineering, distributed systems, and social sciences.
