Grounded in the ethnography of communication and aligned with discourse analysis, this work examines proverbs in the daily lives of Mexican-origin transnational families in Chicago and Michoacán, Mexico. Detailed analyses of proverb use reveal that they serve four social functions: to argue, advise, establish rapport, and entertain. The author posits that understanding language use requires a combination of social and cognitive aspects, demonstrating how ordinary individuals employ sophisticated cognitive processes to interpret the meanings of proverbs in conversation. This study offers a unique blend of ethnographic, linguistic, and cognitive discourse analysis, providing valuable insights into a significant yet under-researched segment of the Mexican-origin population in the Midwestern U.S. It addresses the gap in linguistic studies and focuses on the impact of transnationalism on linguistic practices across cultural groups. By prioritizing everyday language use over cultural or economic factors, the work emphasizes the role of language in connecting distant sites within transnational communities, enriching our understanding of the perspectives of transmigrants.
