The need to respond to market fluctuations and competition has led to an increasing trend of producing diverse product types in small batches. Advanced technologies, such as CNC machines and automatic guided vehicles, have facilitated the development of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), which aim to combine the efficiency of mass production with the versatility required for small-to-medium batch production. This goal necessitates scheduling approaches that optimize technology utilization while adapting to environmental dynamics. Conventional scheduling methods struggle to react promptly and effectively to the complexities of FMSs. In this research, an agent-based concept for flexible and efficient FMS scheduling is introduced. The complexity of scheduling is addressed by breaking it down into autonomous agents organized in a heterarchical multi-layered architecture that leverages FMS flexibility. Each agent employs search heuristics to optimize its tasks from a local perspective. Through interactions among agents at various abstraction levels, the schedule is optimized globally within a reasonable timeframe. The approach supports different scheduling modes to accommodate various managerial decisions and environmental conditions. Additionally, the schedule adapts to disturbances, such as machine breakdowns, using a repair method for efficient real-time reactions. Structural changes in FMSs, like adding new resources, are d
