The Visegrad Group, an alliance of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, was established on February 15, 1991, to promote European integration following significant political changes in Eastern Europe. Its strategic goals included addressing the security-economic vacuum in the region, renewing national sovereignty, and building a parliamentary democracy with a market economy. A key motive was to coordinate activities related to NATO and the EU. This publication examines the achievement of selected strategic goals, particularly in securing a stable environment in Central Europe post-1980s and coordinating efforts for NATO and EU membership. The first goal was met through active participation, leading to the successful NATO membership of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary in 1999, and Slovakia in 2004. Post-NATO, cooperation continued in various areas, including support for further expansion and experience exchange. However, the Visegrad Group did not meet expectations regarding EU integration. The accession of all four countries on May 1, 2004, resulted more from individual efforts than coordinated action. Although discussions on EU matters occurred, individual approaches prevailed, preventing a unified strategy and leaving the vision of Central European cooperation in EU integration unfulfilled.
