This thesis, completed in 2008 after extensive fieldwork in South Africa, presents a thorough literature review on the behavioral response to HIV. It examines the connection between HIV incidence and sexual behaviors, evaluates evidence from observational studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and innovative social experiments, and explores the socio-economic factors linked to HIV infection. The research adopts a social perspective on HIV prevention, emphasizing community-level influences on sexual health outcomes. It highlights the potential of sports, particularly soccer, in fostering social change and addressing the social drivers of risky sexual behaviors during a generalized epidemic. Two soccer-based programs, Grassroot Soccer and Whizz Kids United, are analyzed for their effectiveness in this context. New findings from regression analysis and a six-month follow-up experiment shed light on stigma and peer pressure as significant social factors driving HIV in South Africa. The thesis argues that well-designed sports-based interventions could significantly reduce HIV transmission, especially in regions severely impacted by the epidemic.
