Institutions, defined as “the rules of the game,” are crucial for sustainable societal development, influencing both human interactions and human-nature dynamics. Issues like poverty, famine, civil war, and environmental degradation often stem from institutional failures, while prosperity and resource sustainability arise from effective governance. Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries exemplify the interdependencies between human and ecological systems, necessitating diverse historical governance structures. However, social and ecological conditions are constantly evolving, presenting challenges to existing institutions.
