Today there is increasing awareness of science and practice that large and complex spatial problems exceed a single disciplinary perspective, that impacts at the regional scale cannot be described with simple linear models, and that many stakeholders are concerned making spatial and large-scale landscape design multiparty processes. Together with technological advancements of modern computing, communication, and collaboration this gives rise to a new generation of tools and approaches, which enable to support information-based design effectively. In this context, the term “geodesign” emerged. Geodesign is about using geographic knowledge, usually supported by digital technology, to design in a collaborative way informed by systems thinking for solving significant social and environmental problems and creating our common future environments. The aim of the recent Digital Landscape Architecture (DLA) conferences is to foster a better understanding how geodesign concepts differ from conventional planning and design, how current geodesign approaches work, and which tools and techniques are evolving. These proceedings document the peer reviewed abstracts and papers of the DLA 2014 “Landscape Architecture and Planning: Developing Digital Methods in Geodesign”, held in Zurich, Switzerland, May 21 – 23, 2014. The contributions come from practitioners and academics from the fields of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning focusing on the following areas: Geodesign Case Studies Geodesign Methods and Tools Advancing Geodesign Concepts and Systems From Point Clouds to Geo-based Design Rule-based Approaches for Geodesign Landscape Information Modelling (LIM) and Standardization Mobile Devices for Geodesign Assessing the Tool’s Fitness for Purpose Teaching with Geodesign Tools and Approaches This conference, organized by the local guest chair ETH Zurich, Switzerland, is the fifteenth in a series of conferences headed by Scientific Director Prof. Erich Buhmann. An international and interdisciplinary scientific conference program committee defines the profile and concept of the DLA conference series. An even larger board of reviewers guarantees the scientific value of lectures and written contributions to the proceedings through the blind peer review process. The conference serves as a platform for the ECLAS Committee Digital Technology and experts in this field.
