Figure on display. Stefan Balkenhol - Jeff Wall

Mehr zum Buch

Stephan Balkenhol, a prominent German sculptor born in 1957, creates wood sculptures that reflect a tradition of portraiture, depicting anonymous yet familiar figures. His works are prominently displayed in major cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. Jeff Wall, a leading contemporary photographer from Vancouver, is known for his large-format transparencies that appear spontaneous but are actually carefully staged, often drawing inspiration from various art forms. Their artistic paths crossed in 1988 when Wall wrote an essay on Balkenhol's captivating work. This connection was further nurtured by Renate Goldmann, director of the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum in Düren, Germany, who facilitated a creative dialogue between the two artists. This collaboration culminated in the exhibition "Figure on Display" and the accompanying book. The volume features Wall’s essay on Balkenhol, a contribution by Felix Krämer from the Städel Museum, and a conversation between art dealer Jörg Johnen and both artists. Through this dialogue, the book explores the intersection of their artistic practices and the thematic resonances in their works, offering insights into their creative processes and the nature of confrontation in art.
