The exhibition explores the role of museums as catalysts for progress in China's contemporary socio-political and cultural landscape. It examines the tasks and objectives of museums and cultural spaces in light of 21st-century global, digital, urban, and demographic challenges, alongside local issues of heritage and identity. Through sixteen museum case studies, it poses critical questions: How do museum design and curation shape local and national identity? What role do museums play within their social and urban contexts? What architectural forms best serve their functions? The exhibition highlights the tension between a thriving global art market and diminishing public support for cultural institutions, leading to increased public-private partnerships and the influence of private patrons. Meanwhile, well-funded institutions emphasize the need to represent their cultural identities. Of the featured museums, fifteen were designed by architects as new or repurposed structures. The New Workers Museum in Beijing stands out as an NGO initiative in a former industrial site, showcasing architecture created without architects and emphasizing the urgency of discussing societal identity. 00Exhibition: Aedes Architecture Forum, Berlin, Germany (27.08.-13.10.2016)
