Herbert Maier’s project exemplifies global thinking, showcasing the abundance of images and the slow pace of classical painting alongside his passion for travel and collections. The images Maier brings back from around the world reflect how people portray themselves and others, capturing human culture in all its beauty and complexity. Faces, portraits, heads, and masks are prevalent motifs in art and culture, each representation aiming to reveal the essence of humanity, whether stylized or naturalistic. Over the years, Maier has traveled to diverse regions including Pakistan, India, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala, the USA, Israel, Iran, and West Africa, with his visual library deeply connected to these journeys. The encounters and cultural testimonies he gathered became as significant as his exploration of Western art. Since 2009, he has been compiling this encyclopaedia, which now features over 500 watercolours. This technique, known for its transparency and lightness, enables the creation of numerous images in a short timeframe. An exhibition showcasing this work was held at the Museum Neuer Kunst in Freiburg from October 29, 2016, to February 26, 2017.
