The thesis explores the economic-nationalistic actions of Transylvanian Saxons and Romanians within the Habsburg Monarchy during the Austro-Hungarian Compromise period (1868–1914). Like other non-dominant ethnic groups in the Habsburg Empire, they organized economically along national lines through trade associations, cooperatives, and independent banks. The study examines the dynamics between Transylvanian Saxons and Romanians, closely tied to their interactions with the Magyar "titular nation" in Sibiu/Hermannstadt and Brasov/Kronstadt. It significantly contributes to the understanding of East-Central European economic nationalism and the relationships among various population groups in the ethnically, linguistically, and religiously diverse region of Transylvania. The research investigates how defensive responses to Magyarization policies and dissatisfaction with Budapest’s economic strategies influenced exchanges between Saxons and Romanians. It also considers whether economic welfare or social interactions ever bridged the divides created by ethnicity. Danneberg’s micro-historical analysis offers a compelling examination of coexistence in multi-ethnic Transylvania, revealing the complexities of these relationships.
