Dogri and its Dialects: A Comparative Study of Kandi and Pahari Dogri Kamaldeep Kaur & Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra The work has taken into account the phonology, morphology and syntax of two dialects of the Dogri language, namely Kandi and Pahari. Dogri, an Indo-Aryan language comes under the Western Pahari group of languages. The Western Pahari languages are a cluster of languages which includes: Dogri-Kangri, Mandeali, Hindhuri, Jaunsari, Mahasu, Pahari, Pangwali, Sirmauri and others. The Dogri language is spoken by about five million people in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and undivided Punjab . The whole of Jammu province, south of Pir Panjal, some parts of Himachal Pradesh, viz. Kangra, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Suket, some parts of Punjab, namely Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nurpur, Hoshiarpur and some parts of Pakistan, viz. Shakargarh tehsil of Sialkot, comprise the area of the Dogri language. The main aim of the present work is to analyze the linguistic and sociolinguistic variations of these two dialects. The two varieties of Dogri presented here is the Kandi Dialect spoken in the Kandi regions (urban Jammu), and the Pahari dialect spoken in the Pahari regions (rural Jammu).
