The working group “Border Futures” explored the future viability of cross-border cooperation, focusing on relevant discourses for border areas and the opportunities and challenges they face. Border regions, such as the Greater Region and the Tri-national Metropolitan Region of the Upper Rhine, extend beyond their immediate borders, yet lack effective instruments to adapt cross-border cooperation to changing circumstances. They encounter new challenges from increasing interactions, economic transformations, evolving energy policies, and demographic shifts. Additionally, spatial polarization affects development, highlighting issues of metropolisation in urban centers versus service provision in rural areas. This volume builds on the working group's discussions, illuminating practice-related cross-border cooperation through recent research pertinent to planning in European border regions. The findings aim to inform the Regional Working Group's border areas and contribute to the broader discourse on enhancing cross-border cooperation. Key themes include sustainable governance, new spatial functionalities, innovative planning instruments, and the opportunities presented by the current EU structural policy program for border regions.
