In this study, the effect of a single-dose oral Administration of 300 ml of propylene glycol on the estrus symptoms and the pregnancy rate of dairy cows outside of the Puerperium was examined. 176 cows and 9 heifers of the Friesian breed from one herd were included in the study. Using a randomized selection procedure, the animals were classified into three Groups. In Group 1, 76 cows and 5 heifers were given 300 ml of water orally on the day of Insemination. The 56 cows and 4 heifers of Group 2 were drenched with 300 ml of propylene glycol on the day of Insemination. In Group 3, 44 cows were given 300 ml of propylene glycol orally 2 days before Insemination. A pregnancy check was carried out on the 42nd day after Insemination. The following relevant results could be achieved: With 36.4 – 40%, the pregnancy rate of animals that were given propylene glycol was significantly higher (p<0.05) than in the control Group (19.8%). The Expression of estrus symptoms showed no significant difference between the Groups and between pregnant and not pregnant animals. In conclusion, this study showed that a single-dose oral Administration of 300 ml of propylene glycol as a drench around the time of Insemination can significantly improve the pregnancy rate, but has no effect on the Expression of the estrus symptoms.
