Mehr zum Buch

The three artists, born or residing in the USA, have long admired Max Beckmann's work, which has been seen as quintessentially German outside of Germany. One of Beckmann's first paintings after arriving in the U.S. in 1947 is "The Valkyrie." Cecily Brown initiated an exhibition and publication featuring numerous Beckmann works, both private and from museums, alongside contemporary pieces by the three artists, now part of a younger generation. Notably, Beckmann's "Letters to a Woman Painter," a speech given shortly after his arrival in the U.S. to students at Stephens College, serves as a metaphorical response point. Brown's new paintings reflect Beckmann's atmospheric influence, with clear references to his contours and hues. Ella Kruglyanskaya presents vibrant portraits of women, caricaturing the bar and coffeehouse staff reminiscent of Beckmann's subjects. Dana Schutz incorporates Beckmann's recurring motifs into large-format works, capturing the essence of his world. Collectively, these artists create independent works that highlight the enduring relevance of Beckmann's artistry. The exhibition took place at CFA Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin from June 8 to July 13, 2019.
