This work explores a significant and challenging question in perception theory: how to understand the sensory content of perception without conflicting with fundamental convictions in ontology, epistemology, and the theory of science. The history of philosophical theories of perception reflects numerous unsuccessful attempts to integrate sensory content into a coherent worldview and knowledge framework. The author examines this entire history, engaging with key historical figures such as Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Mill, and Russell, as well as contemporary literature on perception. He critically analyzes various approaches, including sense-datum theory, representation theory, and forms of phenomenalism, highlighting their internal inconsistencies. The author critiques Armstrong's and Pitcher's efforts to address the sensory content problem by reducing it to different belief modalities. In contrast, he defends an adverbial theory of perception, positing that sensory content relates to states of persons, best expressed through adverbial constructions. This position, influenced by Chisholm and Sellars, is presented in greater detail than typically found in existing literature. Ultimately, the author demonstrates that the adverbial theory aligns with a form of scientific realism, leading to a novel defense of the traditional distinction between primary and secondary qualities.
