Numerous projects and programs aim to assist mothers in re-entering the workforce after extended child-raising leave. However, many of these initiatives address dequalification only after it has occurred. This raises the question of whether it is possible to prevent dequalification from happening in the first place by intervening at the start of the leave rather than at its conclusion. Participants in this project sought to explore this innovative approach. Given its novelty, there were no existing examples for the coaches to draw upon, nor was there a recognized need for such support among the young mothers involved. As a result, the endeavor was largely experimental. While some coaching techniques were adapted from established literature, much of the methodology was developed on an ad-hoc basis. Traditionally, coaching has been reserved for elite athletes and senior managers, making this initiative to support young mothers with lower formal qualifications unprecedented. The emphasis on getting the approach right may account for the informal nature of evaluations, relying heavily on client feedback for validation. Nonetheless, the authors aimed to demonstrate that this type of coaching could be effective. The commitment of clients to the voluntary program until its scheduled conclusion was seen as a preliminary validation of the approach. Future research will need to address aspects of quality control and improvement.
