Biomechanics of bi-directional bicycle pedaling

Mehr zum Buch

In the sport of competitive cycling, it is generally conceded that any improvements in the efficiency of the cycling act may provide a competitive advantage for individuals who employ them. Improvements may focus on training, refinements of cycling technique, or alterations to equipment increasing effectiveness of the bicycle as a machine. Innovations in bicycle design, in particular, are generally geared toward making bicycles more mechanically or aerodynamically efficient, allowing cyclists to optimize their energy expenditure. In terms of the act of pedaling, up until now, most research has focused on forward pedaling. Very little research examines backward pedaling as a means of forward propulsion. In the past decades' intervening between the first proposal of the idea and the manufacture of a working prototype employing a bi-directional pedaling mechanism, no research has been undertaken to investigate the functionality of such a design or any efficiency benefits that might result from its use. This book documents the results of a research project which systematically examines the utility of bi-directional pedaling as a means of efficient and effective forward propulsion of a bicycle using Shan’s 2008 bicycle design.
