Empirical studies during the global implementation of automobile assembly plants to research planning indicators in order to derive Practice-oriented Principles (PoP) for future optimization processes in planning and realization: Successful global location transfer of existing production bases calls for comprehensive know-how of potential local planning barriers to increase stability and identify more optimal ways of developing processes for such projects. Local planning barriers are essentially defined by location-related factors and less by a designated country or region. Key influential local factors play a major role at the beginning of a project and are typically not easily analysed and coordinated within a limited time frame. These are the main causes that increased instability in global location transfers and resulted in negative impacts on cost, quality and speed. To reduce such uncertainties and increase the transparency of the interaction between key local influential factors and key planning patterns, a practice-oriented principles (PoP) has been developed through the empirical study of six automobile assembly plants in three specific world regions (Central Europe, North America and East Asia), which were structured into four different sections of geographical location and have annual production capacities of 300,000 cars each. A methodical approach for plant planning with planning indicators from realized projects is comprised of five layout composition modules: the site, shop, schedule, space, and building components. The methodical method has been validated through four additional plants in BRIC countries, which were structured into four different sections of geographical location and three different types of production structure (from 150,000 to 600,000 cars per year). Essential benefits of the PoP are not only its contribution to the stabilization of location transfer processes but it would also be beneficial for optimising quality, speed and cost. Furthermore, the PoP also intends to be a research platform into the future evolutionary trend of car assembly plants under the aspect of “Form follows Flow”.
