Liberal education risks diminishing if it fails to communicate its value to society. For instance, Jefferson viewed a well-rounded individual as someone knowledgeable in both farming and philosophy. This raises the question of why contemporary Americans maintain a rigid divide between theoretical and practical education, and why we struggle to see the liberal arts as essential to civic life. The potential for liberal education to be both useful and enriching remains, but it must be effectively articulated to regain its place in the American educational landscape.
