Readers rejoin Franz Becker and Karl von Leussow. Having survived the trenches, Franz has joined the Air Service and learns to fly in an unreliable machine. At the same time Karl is fighting for his life in the blood-soaked earth of Verdun. He decides to follow Franz into the air - but first he has to stay alive.
