Leroy is the second generation of the African Caribbean, born in Birmingham, England. It’s 1981, the year of the race riots across major cities across England, including Birmingham. There is unrest in the cities, high unemploy- ment, and this was causing tension between Black and White communities. This is the year Leroy finishes primary school and starts secondary school. Leroy is becoming more aware of his skin colour and his identity because This is Black England.
