Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860), a political writer and poet, studied theology in Greifswald and Jena but did not pursue a clerical career. After traveling (1798-99), he focused on history and philosophy, eventually becoming a professor in Greifswald. In 1812, he became the private secretary to Baron von Stein in St. Petersburg. Influenced by Stein’s ideas, Arndt advocated for political unity and the renewal of the empire. This monograph is Arndt’s final work, detailing his personal memories of the Imperial Baron von Stein, a key reformer during the Napoleonic Wars. It serves as a memoir aimed at shaping and disseminating a specific historical narrative, functioning as both a political memoir and an autobiographical source. It interprets the early 19th-century reformer and statesman during a time (1857/58) when hopes for a new era in Prussia were rising. The work was timely, reflecting the political climate a decade after the revolution in Prussia and Germany. Originally published by Karl Reimer for Weidmann, it has now been reissued with a foreword by historian Wolfgang Neugebauer to commemorate the 325th anniversary of the Weidmann publishing house.
